Love is A Size Mismatch

Responsibilities: 2D Frame by Frame Animation

Overview

This 13-frame hand-drawn animation captures a playful Valentine's Day moment, where a shy giant blushes after receiving a tiny kiss from a yellow creature. The piece showcases a distinctive visual style, inspired by fluid lines, distorted forms, and translucent aesthetics. By integrating layering techniques for depth and exaggerated proportions, I enhanced the comedic and emotional expression. The contrasting blue and yellow color palette symbolizes sadness and happiness, shyness and openness, visually reinforcing the characters' contrasting personalities.

Sketches & Rough Animation

I began by sketching rough forms and shapes to establish the initial proportions, body positioning, and character placement—focusing on the giant's seated posture. Next, I refined the sketch, experimenting with leg positions and adding subtle details to both characters. For the final line art, I created a clean guide for animation, using shades of gray to clarify the spatial relationships between body parts. This approach ensured consistency, particularly given my use of layering and translucency in the final coloring. By adjusting frames slightly, I brought the rough animation to life, refining movement and expression.

Color & Clean animation

Next, I finalized the color palette, selecting various shades of blue with a vibrant yellow accent to create contrast. I chose a dark background to make the yellow pop even more, enhancing the visual focus. To achieve a sense of depth and translucency, I layered gradients, ensuring that closer elements appeared lighter and more vibrant, while those further away were rendered in darker, more muted tones.

Due to the small size of the yellow character, I opted for a single-color silhouette to maintain clear visibility and avoid unnecessary detail. Additionally, I removed the line art, as my style relies on contrasting colors and sharp edges to define forms, rather than traditional outlines. This approach reinforces the fluid, layered aesthetic of the piece.

Spacing

With a total of 13 frames, I adjusted the timing by holding certain frames for varying durations, creating a more natural, dynamic flow and avoiding a strictly linear motion.
